3. Hazards Identification

Adverse effects for human health
This product when properly handled according to good working and hygiene practices is not dangerous for human health and the environment. Harmful effects are expected only in case of product’s fire for the emission of noxious vapors.

Adverse Effects for the Environment
The product, when properly used and disposed of, is not dangerous for the environment.

4. First Aid Measures

General: The prolonged contact of the product with skin and eye and its ingestion in large amounts may cause the following symptoms

Eye Contact: Redness
Skin Contact: Redness, dermatitis
Ingestion: Abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea
Inhalation:
Ingestion: Give glasses of water to drink. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Seek medical advice in case of persistent pain
Eye Contact: Wash with plenty of cleans water for 15 Minutes
Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Specific Hazards: Product not flammable and not explosive

Extinguishing Media: Water, powder, foam, chemicals, CO2

Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Wear specific protective equipment (see Haz decomp section), stay upwind and at safety distance from the flames. In case of surrounding fire, remove the containers when possible to do so in safe conditions. In case of impending fire keep containers cool by spraying with water.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: Risk of thermal decomposition with emission of highly toxic and corrosive gases (HF and COF2). Wear self contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing for skin and eyes against corrosion vapors.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Stop the leak in safe conditions as soon as possible. Avoid contact with ignition sources or heated surfaces. Absorb the released liquid with earth, sand or sawdust. Collect and dispose of in a suitable container. Do not allow to enter water courses or lakes or rivers. Contact Local authority or Environmental Agency.

7. Handling and Storage

Handling: Avoid heating the product above its decomposition temperature (290°C). Do not drink, eat and smoke during handling.
Storage: Keep away from heat sources
Keep away from combustible and explosive materials

Compatible packaging materials: Metal, glass, plastic

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Only threshold limits (ACGIH 1993/94) of by products from thermal decomposition are available

Ingredient Name TLV/TWA
Hydrofluoric Acid(HF) 2.6 mg/m3
Carbonilfluoride (COF) 5.4 mg/m3

Engineering Measures: Do not breathe vapors from thermal decomposition.
Respiratory Protection: Protection not necessary in normal use. Self contained breathing apparatus to be worn compulsory in case of thermal decomposition or fire
Hand Protection: Rubber gloves
Eye Protection: Safety goggles
Skin Protection: Work suit or rubber apron, rubber boots

10. Stability and Reactivity

Stability: The product is stable in normal conditions of use and storage

Conditions to Avoid: The product may decompose at temperatures above 290°C with emission of HF and COF2 which are toxic and corrosive gases. The decomposition is promoted by metals, so in presence of titanium and its alloys the decomposition temperature lowers at 260°C.

Incompatibility (materials to avoid): Avoid heating the product above 290°C. Avoid contact with free flames or hot surfaces. Avoid reaction with strong alkaline compounds (alkaline hydroxides, ammonia, non aqueous alkalis). Avoid reaction with Lewis Acids (AlC13, SbF5, CoF3) above 100°C
Avoid reaction with magnesium, aluminum and their alloys above 100°C.
